Student Spotlight

Evan Berti, HPET major and HES Exercise Is Medicine President,  successfully competed in an ultra-marathon this past winter in Hawaii. This summer, two days after celebrating his 23rd birthday, Evan competed in and completed his first Ironman Triathlon. The Ironman took place in Lake Placid, New York.  Competitors swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles and ran 26.2 miles. Whew, I’m tired just writing about it!!!

Message from the Chair Dr. Anne Farrell

Welcome to the 2017-2018 academic year. We are excited to see what this year brings, however, would like to take the time to outline a few highlights of the last year.

Some of our highlights:

Dr. Jill Bush was elected to the NCSA Nominations Committee. Her duties will be to serve the interest of the membership by selecting a slate of candidates for the Board of Directors to be elected by a majority vote (of those voting) of the NSCA membership eligible to vote in NSCA elections.

Dr. Avery Faigenbaum earned an impressive award and a title this summer:  Awarded the 2017 Boyd Epley Award for Lifetime Achievement by The National Strength and Conditioning Association and becoming an International Honorary Fellow through the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Royal College of Physicians, Ireland, 2017. Additionally, had a a very busy spring and summer serving as the keynote speaker four times: 1)Youth Sports Safety Conference, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, July, 2017, 2) American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Annual Conference,, San Diego, CA, May, 2017, 3) Washington University 10th Annual Sports Medicine Update, St Louis, MO, March, 2017, and for the  4) Congreso Internacional de Prevencion de Lesiones Deportivas. Universidad Catolica de Murcia, Spain,  March, 2017.

Dr. Anne Farrell, along with Dr. Tracy Perron (Nursing, TCNJ) and Dr. Tami Jakuboski (Nursing, Gwenydd Mercy University) presented at the 28th International Nursing Research Congress in Dublin, Ireland. The presentation focused on a collaborative approach to reducing childhood obesity.

Drs. Laura Bruno and Anne Farrell participated in the Unity Ways HEALTHY SCHOOLS, HEALTHY STUDENTS conference at Robert Woods Johnson. The conference focused on Fitness as Fuel for Educational Success: Obesity, Nutrition, Physical Fitness, and Student Behavior and Learning.  Bruno and Farrell discussed the impact of physical activity on academic performance and how quality physical education is necessary and ways for classroom teachers to implement movement throughout the school day.
